Making ranking submissions - processes / technology

What technologies might be employed to help firms prepare high-quality submissions to ranking organizations (e.g. Chambers)

Overview

Lex Mundi has a Best Practices Guide on Legal Directory Submissions - that is available here. @Jorge Carrillo was one of the main authors of that guide (email him with any questions).
With respect to automation and technology, there are options in the category of "experience management."
This kind of software helps you do three basic things:
  • Collect "experience" information regarding matters and transactions
  • Review / edit this information for use in RFPs / proposals
  • The ability to browse / filter / search by practice group, industry, lawyer, geography (if you operate in multiple jurisdictions)
This software should be founded upon a combination of good business practices, senior leadership buy-in, and lawyers' willingness to provide clean data (or co-operate in the gathering of that data).

Collecting a smaller amount of good data is much better than gathering more of lesser quality.

If you can collect that data in a way that is integrated into when and how the lawyers are performing their tasks - it will make this process much easier. Ideally your "ranking" collection of data is fed from multiple sources automatically. Of course, there will be some details (e.g. total, final, value of a deal) which cannot be known until later, and that is OK so long as you follow-up with the lawyers working on the matter later.
